Many people don't tip at all. It is totally voluntary. I usually round up if I get reasonable service. The system that Lynda describes sounds similar to many countries in Europe , certainly in Central Europe - exactly the same rules apply.
It is interesting to note that restaurant workers in western Europe , with a higher basic wage and much lower average tip income, and restaurant workers in the USA, with a lower basic wage and a much higher average tip income, make pretty much the same average total gross income from wages and tips.

The service charge is included. These are two different matters to us. The service charge covers the restaurant's expenses and the wages of the staff.
A tip is a voluntary extra, a reward for good service which you are free to give or not to give. It's common to round up - like: bill is 8.
Trained waiters and waitresses receive decent wages they can make a living on. They won't mind tips but are not dependent on them.
In pubs, the staff are often students and other young people who do that job for a couple of hours a week and receive lower pay.
With them I'm usually more generous if they are nice and do their job well because I knew enough fellow students at university who did such jobs to pay for their studies, and I know this is hard.
I'm concerned that leaving money on the credit card the owners of the establishment keeps the money or decides what to do with it. And the waiter gets little or none of it.
As they never even mention that I made a mistake. I miss-spoke when I said the "tip" is included in the bill. Something that is rather obvious to me and probably also the average Berliner seems to be a miracle to visitors, guests, tourists — nuBerliners.
First of all: of course tipping is welcome in Berlin — at least in most places. Trying to tip the dentist may however be considered inappropriate — tipping somebody at the city administration may be actually be considered bribery — which can bring you into trouble, since that is illegal in Germany.
But tipping the taxi driver, the hair dresser and the staff at the local restaurant is considered normal.
In my experience not tipping at any of these occasions would actually be considered rude. Basic rule of thumb: if there is service, there should be a tip.
Anyways — more is more. But that may be interpreted as a rather rude statement. In a fast food stand, buying a Curry Wurst or a Kebab tipping is not really expected.
Usually you would pick up your food from the desk — but even if it is delivered to your table a tip would not be expected.
It would however probably be welcome. Actually the German expression for tip would be Trinkgeld — which means something like drink money. When ordering and paying a drink at the bar desk an extra 50 Cents or a Euro is most likely appreciated by the bar staff.
When ordering something fancy like cocktails or expensive Whiskey you may of course also give a higher tip. Again: more is more. The photographer Michel Leung Kut reveals a series of photos captured with the Diana Instant Square.

There are many tours for visitors to experience in Berlin, some paid and some for free. For the paid tours you may wish to add a few Euros up to about ten per cent of the cost of the tour if the tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly.
If the tour is free you can give up to the amount you think the tour was worth, based on quality as well as the time taken, and adding a little extra for excellence.
